Discover Bezalel VSOP Potstill Brandy

Bezalel VSOP Potstill Brandy is the pinnacle of patience and craftsmanship. Double-distilled in small batches and matured for a minimum of 6 years in French oak barrels — with the latest batches reaching 8 years — this "Very Superior Old Potstill" delivers an intricately layered experience that is unapologetically robust on the palate, yet seductively smooth on the swallow.

Crafted at Bezalel Wine & Brandy Estate on the N14 Highway between Upington and Keimoes, in the heart of South Africa's Green Kalahari, this is a brandy born of a unique landscape — hot summers, cool nights, and decades of winemaking tradition dating back to 1947.

Patience. Rewarded.

South African law requires potstill brandy to be aged for a minimum of 3 years. We age ours for at least 6 — and the current batch has rested a full 8 years in small French oak barrels, resulting in exceptional smoothness, depth, and a complexity that simply cannot be rushed. Every sip reflects the unhurried rhythms of the Kalahari.

What makes potstill brandy special?

Unlike blended or grape brandy, South African Potstill Brandy must be made from 100% wine distilled in traditional copper potstills and aged in small oak barrels. It is widely regarded as one of the finest brandy styles in the world — a category in which South Africa consistently punches above its weight on the global stage.

How it's made

Bezalel Wine & Brandy Estate, located on the N14 Highway between Upington and Keimoes in the Northern Cape's Green Kalahari region, has been family-owned on the Orange River since 1947. Our VSOP Potstill Brandy is double-distilled in traditional copper stills and matured in small French oak barrels for at least 6 years (with recent batches at 8 years). This extended ageing process creates exceptional smoothness, depth, and complexity — a true testament to patience rewarded.

05 - How to Enjoy

Serve & pair.

Serve

This refined spirit is best appreciated slowly:

  • Chilled and neat — Serve in a large snifter at slightly below room temperature to highlight the fruit and oak layers.
  • On the rocks — One large ice cube in a tumbler or snifter — the chill enhances the smoothness without diluting the complexity.
  • Refreshed serve — Dilute 50/50 with sparkling water, soda, or ginger ale over plenty of ice for a light, elegant drink that lets the dried peach and vanilla shine.
  • Cocktail ideas:
    • Classic Brandy Manhattan: 50 ml VSOP, 25 ml sweet vermouth, dash of bitters, cherry garnish.
    • VSOP Sidecar: 50 ml VSOP, 25 ml Cointreau, 20 ml fresh lemon juice.
    • Brandy Ginger: 40 ml VSOP, ginger ale, lime wedge — simple and refreshing.
Pair

The rich, fruity, and oaky profile pairs beautifully with:

  • Dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa) — amplifies the dried fruit and vanilla notes.
  • Roasted nuts — complements the roasted nut character on the nose and palate.
  • Cheese platters — aged gouda, brie, or blue cheese for contrast.
  • Braai/grilled meats — lamb chops or steak with char — the oakiness matches the grill marks.
  • Dried fruit desserts — apricot tart or peach crumble.
